Preparing for Floods

floodFloods can be very destructive. A sudden overflow of water can do severe damage to property in an instant. Even if the floods are not that strong, they can still do considerable water damage to properties.

There are places that are more susceptible to floods than others. Low-lying areas especially neighborhoods and communities in low valleys or near bodies of water like rivers, seas and lakes. It is very important for people living in these areas to prepare for eventual floods.

Although there are floods that can happen in an instant, they usually come with some sort of warning. The best sign of an incoming flood is always the weather. Most floods usually come during or after a very heavy downpour. It is the accumulation of excess water going down a sloping area that creates fast charging floods.

A heavy downpour can bring great amounts of water in a certain area in a very short span of time. The soil may not be capable of absorbing all the water and they tend to flow down into a lower area. This rush of water sometimes converge into a narrow area that allows the rushing water to gather force that gives the flood its destructive power. This is how a flash flood occurs.

But there are also other causes of floods. One can be caused by a sudden overflow of a body of water. Although such a flood may not have as great a destructive power as a flash flood. But it can also do considerable damage because such floods may take days to clear up with no escape route due to the overflow of water from rivers or lakes.

There are also floods that can be caused by earthquakes called tsunamis. An example of its destructive power was evident during an unforgettable tsunami incident on December of 2004 where it struck Asia. Tsunamis have a force that can take everybody by surprise. Whatever the cause of the flood, it always pays to prepare.

There are way that people may be able to prepare for the onslaught of floods especially if they live in places that are at most risk. The best way to prepare is by picking the best spots where the flood won’t likely to disturb you. This means that if you plan on building a home in a flood prone area, you would be better off avoiding floodplains as much as possible. Building your home on higher ground may help you avoid being affected by floods in case they do come into your area.

Another way of making sure of protecting yourself and your property from floods is by trying to make your home a bit elevated than the rest of the land. Try also to reinforce your home better than the usual homes in your area. If you have the means, try to construct effective barriers such as levees, beams and flood walls in order to prevent floodwater from damaging your home interiors. Try also to seal walls in your home in case you do have rooms that are lower than the surrounding area such as your basement. If you forget this important tip, you may just find yourself with a flooded basement and do a lot of damage in your home.

As a protective measure, if you have the furnace, water heater and electric panels installed in your basement, make sure that you have them elevated to ensure that they are not be damaged if in case the flood water do enter into your home. Try also to install check valves in your sewage systems so that the sewage deposits from backing up into your home in case of floods.
